Open Basic Education
What is OBE
Open Basic Education is an alternative pathway to foundational and upper-primary education designed by the National Institute of Open Schooling. It offers flexible learning for children who need nontraditional settings and individualized pacing, including neurodiverse learners. OBE is delivered through accredited agencies and leads to recognized certification.
Who it is for
OBE serves children from 6 to 14 years and can also support adolescents and adults who re-enter learning. It is especially relevant for school drop-outs, out-of-school learners, and children with special needs who benefit from personalized, multi-modal instruction.
Levels and Equivalence
OBE has three progressive levels that map to the formal system.
• Level A is for 6-8 years old.
• Level B is for 9-11 years old.
• Level C is for 12-14 years old.
This ensures smooth transition to higher classes or to NIOS Secondary later.
Curriculum and Learning Materials
Learners study language, mathematics, environmental studies and other foundational areas, with additional subjects introduced at higher levels. NIOS publishes level-wise curricula and books, including EVS and foundational computer skills where prescribed. Materials are available in multiple languages.
Assessment and Certification
OBE uses age-appropriate assessments with flexible scheduling through accredited agencies. Successful learners receive a jointly signed certificate from NIOS and the accredited agency after meeting subject requirements, which is accepted as equivalent to the respective classes in the school system.
